Stretch marks are scars formed when there is destruction of elastic and collagen fibers in the skin, usually caused by the stretching of it. The lines are formed because of the decreased thickness of the dermis and epidermis. There are two types of stretch marks: the recent ones and old stretch marks. When they are recent they are pink, red or purple in color while the old ones are whitish.

There are few ways to improve the appearance of stretch marks depending on the skin tone and type.  Most of the treatments include retinoic acid to stimulate the production of collagen in the region along with microdermabrasion which will help to reorganize the tissues and facilitate the penetration of other substances.  Infrared & Fractional laser are also indicated in some cases to stimulates the production of collagen with remodeling of the dermis, thereby modifying the appearance of the stretch mark.
